Pele, hands down.
Without a doubt, Pele will hold that title until he wears the topsoil tuxedo. He retired professionally at the right time to not let his age show. Beckham is milking it for all he's worth.
As for fan friendly, Pele still outclasses Beckham.
Pele
My favourite is definitely Ronaldinho. I like his style. I mean just look at him go! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1374289816694973820&q=ronaldinho&hl=en
without any question.. Pele
alan brazil
Pele
Zenadine Zindaine
Ronaldinio
many more ....
Modern day Thiery Henri-----Arsenal and France
Pele------=Brazil
George Best--------Manchester United and Nthn. Ireland
Others come in there too
Pele
How do you compare people who were at their peak in different eras? Many people claim Pele was the best of all time. He was certainly the best of his time, but would that still hold true now?
If you are talking about strikers, then I would probably rate Ronaldinho as top. For midfielders I reckon David Beckham, and for defenders Alan Hansen. My choice of goalkeeper would be Dino Zoff. I'm sure many will disagree, but this is my opinion and I'm not swayed by the fact that Ronaldinho first showed his prowess for his country at Hampden.
Many say Pele simply because others say Pele. Undeniably, he was one of the most gifted players ever, but what about Eusebio? Maradona? Gordon Banks? Henry?
I cannot say Pele since I have only ever seen him in short clips. The greatest player I have ever seen actually play was Zidane. His touch was awesome and he read the game as though he has an eye in the sky looking down. He knew where everyone was and where they could get to, and his passing was superb as well.
Two men stand out way above all others
Pele and Maradonna.
The Brazilian couch once said you could put Pele in any position on the pitch and he would still be the best player (that included being in goal).
He has scored some fatnastic goals. Getting the ball to swerve so much more than anyone else at the time.
He is also a great ambassador for the sport.
He never cheated....
Maradonna is more from my generation. In England he scored two goals agaisnt us in one match. One of them casued him to be hated by the English. He used his hand to put the ball into the goal and the ref did not spot it - "The Hand of God" incident.
However as much as we hated him for that, the other goal he scored was voted by the English as the best goal of all time (and remember this is from a nation that hated him). He took the ball from one end of the pitch to the other going around players like Terry Butcher 3 times (who was a great defender), before scoring.
He is not such a great ambassador for the sport (drugs...) but there is no escaping his skill and brilliance.
I cant choose between the two but they do stand out above the other great players. So Ronalhdhino etc are great but I dont beleive they come close.
Finally there was George Best. I would rate him third but he was magic to watch and such a character. Unfortunately he never got to display his talents on the big stage as his country that he was so proud of Northern Ireland never got through to the final stages of the World Cup.
But he did great things for Manchester United (and for Northern Ireland - but one man does not make a team).
forget your Zinade's an pele's. do you not know 'George Best'. the man was a genius at the game and thats from a liverpool fan!
Maradonna gets my vote. Up until i saw (sorry england fans) Maradonna it would have to have been GEORGE BEST, exciting, strong, used both feet and tried to stay on them unlike the overpaid nancies we have today!!
this is easy: Zidane.
Gordon Banks
Position: Goalkeeper
World Cups: 1966 (Winner), 1970
Widely considered the greatest goalkeeper ever, Banks conceded only one goal -- a Eusebio penalty in the semi-final -- before the 1966 World Cup final, which England won. He will be forever remembered for a mind-blowing save off a header from Pele in the 1970 World Cup.
Ronaldinho may be at the moment, but no one is EVER going to take over Pele. the man scored over 1200 goals for gods sake!!
Ronaldinho has definitely taken Maradona's crown.
David Beckham...plus he's hot.
Mia hamm is good also.

Pele, but Beckham is getting pretty close. But lets face it everyone, a soccer player, watcher or not, has heard of Pele. I also think that Mia Hamm could be one.
Pele, or Bobby Lenarduzzi
We all know it's Oswaldo Giraldo Junior (formerly known as Juninho Paulista). You know it is Jon. Stop the Cherade. Its not Dean Whitehead.
My two kids
pele or garhinca im british i know my football henry is also very very good
Gay-vid Beckham
