Japan also invaded the Dutch East Indies on the same day because of their oil reserves. There had been tension between Japan and United States for multiple things, and one was the fact Japan importss 99% of its resources, including oil from the US. However, whether or not is justified is something that is going to differ from person to person. However, there are conspiracy theories the Presidency knew Pearl Harbor was going to happen.

Anyone who kills someone else, even for some reason, is never justified... Especially, in the case of pearl harbor, it was a dock for Pacific Fleet and the guys at the harbor were just relaxing!! Lot of people got killed and that can never be justified. Neither Japan's aggression on Pearl harbor nor US's revenge at Hiroshima was justified coz bith resulted in innocent people losing their lives and that is something that can never be justified.

From a military and geopolitical standpoint, it was a no-brainer. Wiping out the only power able to check your expansionist plans in the Pacific would raise their chances of success immensely. America was supremely fortunate that its carriers were away...

It's only a "no-brainer" once you decided to have an expansionist plan in the first place. Did they need to increase their co-prosperity sphere through agressive war rather than international treaty and trade? The answer YES would also be a "no-brainer" IF you had already decided - that war was the refiner of your national character - the expression of all that was great about your race and - that being Japanese meant that you were superior to all other races and destined to rule them, their lands and their resources.

Most of you have a one sided "Americas the best" view. but where the US navy was before hand was not in range of the bomber planes until they moved it to pearl harbor, Hawaii. The US President wanted to become involved with WWII but the people didn't. they used pearl harbor to gain means of support to go to war. its a little suspicious if you ask me and look at the facts. also, the attack was not unprovoked. the US had cut off trade and stopped other countries from trading with japan, they didnt have much oil left, and no they did not use americas oil base in hawaii. japan bombed hawaii but never attempted to take it over or any part of america.

Japan certainly felt they were justified. The US had cut off selling oil to them & had also refused to sell them more scrap metal. The US resorted to this, due to Japan continuing war with China, especially in light of the Rape of Nanking. Japan wanted to engage all of asia into the "East Asia Co-Proserity Sphere". This was a noble idea, where Japan comes in & subugates the population, by whatever means necessary, then steals all natural resources for the Emperior's glory. The US objected to this. Had Japan taken the trouble to declare war on the US, prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, the attack would not have been met with as much hostility. This alone did not justify their actions.
