It's not that lonely a word, that's just perspective. It IS the best policy in most cases, and I can only advise you not to listen to Billy Joel.

Just because Billy Joel says so doesn't make it true even tho he is a master song smith but being brutally honest all the time could make one a very lonely person a little white lie can sometimes be required like on answering the does my bum look big in this question

Because those who chose to use honesty instead of lies to get themselves out of sticky situations tend to get hurt themselves. To be honest and true to someone, be it friend, relative or lover don't always choose the right time or words to express. Because you care for someone and want to be totally honest with them often backfires in your face. If you are a strong person you can take the short stint of loneliness that comes with the territory. If you aren't you lie yourself into a corner and end up covering your butt forever. Being true to what you believe is a much better place, even if lonely at times. At least that's my take on it.
