Depends on the model.
The Hummer H1, the original Hummer, is a civilian version of the Humvee, used by our military. If you're into serious off-road driving, it's probably the very best vehicle you can get for that purpose at any price.
The H2 is, as you say, a “show off car”. It's essentially a glorified Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon at about twice the price. It's for people who have more dollars than sense.
People suffer from over-consumption of large things. (aka- Affluenza, which is a great book "Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic") This causes them to believe that 'bigger is better'. It's also why people buy ridiculously large homes and don't use half the rooms for anything. It's a waste of land, just like the hummer is a waste of gas and parking space as you stated.
What I consider amazing is that these dumb trucks aren't even good on rocky terrain.
As stated by others. the Hummer, specifically the original is a model designed after the military's and make excellent off roading vehicles and towing machines. However it isn't the only one that fulfills that purpose and others are cheaper. still, it's understandable if someone has one.
Yet many people do not buy a hummer for off roading and such, and fine that it is a show-off car.t he Hummer2 is even worse, as its less practical at off-roading and really more show-offy than the original. The hummer acts as most expensive vehicles, not made for practicality on the road, but rather to show people the money one posseses in hopes to attract
ME for one.
pure status symbol.
Have your ever noticed whoever is driving one, they are all shiney and clean.
I would love to see one dirty - muddy -- branches hanging off the top of the vehicle from some good mud wrangling - then I would say hey--- that is a true indication of why you bought the vehicle,in the first place - for fun.
Works great for those suffering self-image problems. Therefore I drive 10 year old junk cars, cheap and disposable. So do my kids, But my wife gets a newer efficient vehicle for her business, a reliable toyota is paramount for her.

I think that hummers are a big waste of space; I hate to say it but I think that some people drive big huge gas guzzling cars to make up for a lack of what they don't have. I'm sorry but someone who lives in the city and no where even remotely near a place you can go offroading needs one!
It is a HIGHLY specialized vehicle unsuited for many civilian purposes. Let's pick it apart.
- It's gas mileage is atrocious. Most consumers that own one complain about that. Why they didn't research it beforehand is beyond me.
- It's off-road capability isn't all that. It can't do what it's military cousins can. And it isn't allowed certain places due to it's width. Try climbing Mt. Washington ;)
- It's 0-60 time is worse than my 1987 Corolla was... with a missing spark plug wire!
- It's top speed isn't great either.
I agree with Bob; all it's good for is showing that you have more dollars than sense.
I think hummers are the most ugly cars I have EVER seen in my life.
Yes, I agree. Too damaging for the enviroment.
Even if it were a Mercades Benz? My dad bought one for OVER $100,000 (US Money), and it has pretty good gas mileage and is very nice from the inside out. And the thing was USED, but in very great shape, though.
Hummer's aren't the only "show off" vehicles out there, there are plenty of regular kinds of cars and trucks that cost way-too much, are good for nothing, that would fit the bill too.
Personally, I wouldn't spend 100K$ for wheels, but then again, it's not like I've got it to spend anyway . . .
I see nothing wrong with a h2...ok the ones that people bling out are stupid, but really people who can't afford one say bad things about it when they really would want one....there are worse cars out there...look at bmw, horrible cars but people still buy them...its your choice to want one or not...but they are great
depends on why you bought it. all hummer model H1,2,or3 are excellent off road vehicles, if you need an off road vehicle, if you just plan on driving your H2 to the mall then it is just a show off vehicle, the same could be said of any vehicle that does something or looks like something that you don't need.
While i would agree that they are just vehicles to show off, I will also admit that if money was no problem for me and I could afford one, I would buy one in a heartbeat! Just being honest. All people with money have something or drive a vehicle that they don't need or bought just because they could. You can see that on "MTV Cribs" all day! That's the freedom people have who have a lot of money. They can buy shit just because!
They ARE great for doing what they're designed to do. Mine has crossed the most challenging terrain imaginable, and is often the ONLY stock highway-ready vehicle that can cope with the 4-foot snowstorms we often get. Besides, not 14 years after I bought it, I can STILL sell it for 70%+ of what I paid for it. Show me another regular-production (and non-antique) vehicle with THAT kind of resale value!
I think Hummers are garish and ostentatious. They have no socially redeeming value except to pander to the vanity of the over indulged.

You're reading Who here thinks the Hummer is just a show off car? Just because they look good, they have HORRIBLE gas mileage and cost kind-of a lot of money.
