Apparent to himself? I'd say when he has a near-death experience, sees someone else die, or loses a loved one.

Also, my view of the life process is that we grow and develop for about twenty years, but the moment we stop growing is the beginning of our slow deterioration toward death.

    Cool question.

For me, it was in my 40s when I realized I could never be the Boy of Wonder again - and it really hit when I had a blood clot and came close to death.

When other members of their age group die. Elderly folk pass away throughout our lives but we seem to be able to accept that as the nature of things. Fortunately not all of us are exposed to the death of children - but when friends and acquaintances, people you went to school with or worked with, sporting team members etc, your siblings perhaps - these are people living a similar life to yourself, and it brings their loss right to your doorstep.

I think upon the death of another. When parents die, people become aware that they could be next. Also when same aged peers die.
