  • The reason I no longer support the Olympics is because of the heavy use of pro athletes. The Olympics were originally for non-pros, but in recent years that idea has become a joke. Now, the Olympics itself is a joke.
  • The amateur status at the Olympics was long ago discarded. Now the IOC allows each sport federation to determine if and what sort of professionals may participate in the Olympics. FIFA very strictly defines the type of football player allowed to be on an Olympic team (and they are strictly armatures). Professionals are allowed in to participate in some sports on the reasoning that it increases the overall quality of the sport. In Peking you will see professionals from a variety of leagues in many nations playing Basketball and Baseball. In this era of professionalism in the Olympics many nations support their athletes during preparations (sometimes inclusive of a salary for training) and some nations pay a lump sum cash reward for winning medals. Certainly the altruistic and amateur Olympics are long dead and professionalism is the flavor of the day.
  • Now most Athletes are professional. Tennis players , Basketball Players they are all Millionaires. Some are still considered Amateur like Boxers. But yes pro Athletes are allowed to compete. Britain does not send a Football team because it is Great Britain and we do not and cannot agree on a team to represent Great Britain. Ronaldhino is there playing for Brazil. Boxers are still Amateur.
