  • The Puritans in Mass Bay Colony were followers of John Calvin's teachings. They wanted to "purify" the Protestant Church of England of all Catholic beliefs. They left England because they were being persecuted by the English government and the official English Church. They set up a theocratic form of government in Mass. The Pilgrims in Plymouth Colony were also followers of John Calvin's teachings, but were called Separatists because they didn't want to purify the church from within, they wanted to separate from the church and make a new church.
