Answerbag needs questionaskers and responders. equally. Mutual respect would be nice but civility should be mandatory. Do you agree?

You're reading Are multiple accounts and cross-posting permitted on Answerbag, and if so, are they common (/not uncommon) and easily tolerated?
Comments
"Cross-posting is not allowed as all those other questions will be flagged as duplicates. Pick one best category you
feel it should be in and that's it. Since all asked questions show up on the home page and then are available in
their best category, there is no reason for multiple questions and a spreading of the information gathered in the
answers all over the website."
------
Presumably in the home category,
most folks would be interested in questions asked the past few days---at most;
indeed, even more than a few minutes would be pushing it for them.
------
Likely the same for the Best Questions category.

" Questions never expire here so it's important to combine all duplicates so they are all found in one place. Then
it makes it easier for information to be found when people use Google to search for answers."
------
Presumably, when people search for questions, it's still a somewhat general search
e.g. "Obama, McCain" for any question where both are mentioned, somewhat regardless of specificities;
or,
they are looking for a specificity not yours
e.g. "Obama, McCain, 'favorite Ramones song' "

In my experience in Yahoo!Answers,
I'd at times cross-post when I was unsure about particular categories.
------
Sometimes the category I was most sure about
---the one I'd have to pick if had only one choice
---had the fewest answers---sometimes none.
Indeed, it might even get reported (deleted) while a category I'd least expect to get an answer I got many good ones.

This was sort of a problem for Yahoo!Answers.
But if this is going to be even more a problem on Answerbag,
I might as well start looking for another answer site,
or failing that,
to give up on answer sites altogether.
------
No use attempting to circumvent rules,
and with apparent success,
devote hundreds of hours to answering and comments,
only to be sandbagged with suspension after suspension.

Here's a similar question I asked;
though it was when I didn't realise AB intense anti-cross-posting position.
------
With Yahoo Answers I can link cross-posts to a chosen post. Can I do so with AnswerBag, and if so, how?

I have no idea what a 'best questions' category is or a "home category'. People DO go back more than a few days. Happens all the time. And if you make "Friends" with people here they usually will check on their "Friends Q&A" list for all the questions their Friends have asked and answer them if they can, even if they are days and weeks old. People don't have some stigma about age of questions here since we all know they don't expire so I don't understand your bias. This isn't YA, it's AB and the people are different and use the site differently.
.
I don't know why you have a problem with the categories here as there are hardly any with only a handful of questions since questions DON'T expire so they all remain and fill up the categories. And people can see the questions in the next category up, too or the main category.
.
by Galeanda on August 21st, 2008
I don't understand why you think that is all a problem. Don't think of it as a replacement for YA as it's a different place, with it's own unique features that work for thousands of people. Questions get answers most of the time. And I don't see the reason or need to cross post. Questions fit where they do. If someone thinks it will fit somewhere different than where you put it, they will flag it to move it and if the staff agrees it will get moved. So cross posting is useless here as likely they will end up in the same place or if the questions are similar, be combined.

Galeanda,
your time is far more than the mere two points I can give your question.

I'm sure a few do.
Pity they are unlikely to answer either of our questions

Yes, and some of the answers might even be good

easy to answer,
not esoteric

to answer questions no matter how esoteric.

For the most part this is true.

Which attest to the my liking of AB, AB's popularity and AB's answering resource capacity;
but it brings with it the problem of relying on the masses in one category to your question who maybe indifferent,
while others of another category might be interested in answering it.

First off, I have to say that the way you respond with each comment separated as you do is very difficult to read and understand. Sorry but I didn't write my response as one sentence at a time but one thought at a time and to see it all taken one line each doesn't make any sense now.
.
I still say I don't know what a "Best category" is because we do not have that here. What you linked to is nothing more than a page that lists questions on the leaderboard that got the most points last week. In no way does it mean they are Best. So they got lots of points. Points don't mean much to a member, why should it concern you about not getting 42 points? Though don't discount getting 100 or more points in one day from good or fun questions. I often get 20-30 points in one day when I ask one question. At 5 points from most users it adds up quickly, but so what? Some of what I think are my bets questions may get many answers but not many points as people are feeling more serious about it.
by Galeanda on August 22nd, 2008
And it's not a home category, it's simply the home page where ALL but adult questions show up. It is not a category. There is no way to place anything in a home category. A question at least has to go inside one of the main categories. So why you wouldn't find room for at least placing your questions there is beyond me. Place it in "Life and Society" or "Outside the Bag" if you must.
.
And you said that people won't answer questions older than a few hours, well quite a few did after all, many hours because folks don't spend time just on the home page as I've tried to explain.
.
You are so wrong about people only answering in a chatty way or esoterically. That would depend on what kind of people you ask to be friends with. You have to find those friends that have questions you would like to answer, their style, their interests, not because you just like them. It's not a chatroom or forum for friends.
by Galeanda on August 22nd, 2008
There is nothing wrong with rules, either. Rules are what keep this place from being a place overrun with Trolls and no reason bannings with no justification. This place is very different and it's because of good rules, rules that have made this place better and rules that do change from feedback from members. The staff really do listen. We do have community leaders, like myself, that watch out for those trolls and troublemakers and can take care of problems immediately. I find this place has much fewer rules and restrictions that allow for great freedom of expression and if you feel like you've been treated bad you have recourse. You can use the feedback button on each page. And you can bring it to the attention of a CL for help, too.
by Galeanda on August 22nd, 2008
I have to disagree and say that I have found questions do get answered here and you don't have to wait. i have been here over a year and I had all but one of my 550 questions until just one month ago when it was sort of answered. And I've had 98% of my questions answered answered for nearly my whole year here. That belies your thought that questions need months to get answered. And most of my questions are not the 'fluffy' kind.
by Galeanda on August 22nd, 2008
Yes, things get flagged and moved or rejected or combined. But if you don't like it, you don't have to 'lump it'. You can use the Feedback and explain why you disagree and many times they reverse the question, though they will not allow cross-posting. If something can go in a different category, then it can be worded carefully to be dissimilar so it can be a valid question in a different category. This place runs on questions, hopefully good questions. And surely if your matter that you desire questions on is so important you can craft an excellent question with details that will make it different.
by Galeanda on August 22nd, 2008
Yartet, you bring up many good questions and concerns, and Gleanda is HIGHLY qualified to answer them, what with her being a CL and all.
.
If I may put in my two cents here, you sound like a person who CARES about the quality a question/answer site provides, both from members and staff. In my opinion, that makes you a very valuable person as a potential member.
.
Like any other site, AB has it's rules and quirks. One of the best things I enjoy about AB is the quality of many of the members.
by The Chief on August 22nd, 2008
The members really make AB stand out to me. Most adhere to a 'code of honor', if you will: a sense of 'netiquette'. They have standards of civility they practice and expect others to practice as well. I've VERY few problems with others here...far less than I would have expected from past experience. Trolls aside, most everybody here treats everybody else like adults, even those I wonder about myself.
.
I understand some of what you're saying. But personally, I think you are making a mountain out of a mole hill with respect to cross-posting.
by The Chief on August 22nd, 2008
Let's say I ask a duplicate question (and my very first one got flagged as such...a learning lesson for me!). It get's flagged and IF the staff agrees, they combine it with the other question. It's still there, just under the other question.
.
And I learn a little bit about doing better searches and phrasing my questions better.
by The Chief on August 22nd, 2008
If I ask a question and I can't find a catagory to fit it into, I either pick the best fit or I re-evaluate how I have worded my question so it better fits somewhere.
.
If I think one of your questions is not in the right catagory, I will try and see if it's reasonable as is before I flag it. You might have deliberately posted it where you did in order to solicite specific types of answers. In general, if it's not OBVIOUSLY in the wrong catagory, I will leave it alone.
by The Chief on August 22nd, 2008
My OPINION as to the correct catagory isn't good enough for the staff. It has to meet certain criteria, and one of those is probably the OBVIOUS one. Galeanda can attest to my poor performance on flagging when I first started...I did not understand some of this and as a result, many of my flagged questions were rejected. And that counts AGAINST me. You can go to my profile and look. Bad as my score is now, it's SIGNIFICANTLY better than it was not long ago.
by The Chief on August 22nd, 2008
And if one of my questions DOES get moved? So what! It'll still be listed on my profile page. It still exists. People still read it. A search of key words will still find it. Anyone else who has ever answered it or commented on it still has it on their profile page.
.
And best of all: if I REALLY think it was re-catagorized incorrectly, I can present a logical case to the staff and ask that it be restored to where it was. That's been done to others here.
by The Chief on August 22nd, 2008
You ask as good a question as many I've seen. You aren't rude or obnoxious in your answers or comments. And, perhaps most imporantly, when you have problems or questions you ASK for help/clarification instead of giving up and b*tching to others about how AB sucks because of (fill in the blank). Like this topic.
.
Personally, I'd just like to say "Welcome to Answerbag! Hope to see you around more!"
by The Chief on August 22nd, 2008
Goodness me, The Chief and Galeanda,
To give a proper comment, on your comments,
I will now print this page out and give them the proper perusal they deserve;
and possibly, additional comments.
------
very quickly, the chatty and esoteric comments weren't meant to demean the respondants, but rather to point at the ease of some questions to answer well and the difficulty for others.

Until then, thank you kindly to the both of you.
