If I purchase a standalone set of 5.1 surround sound speakers can I connect it directly to my DVD player (without a receiver) and still get true 5.1 surround sound?

    This depends on the DVD player that you have. Most high end DVD players have 5.1 surround outputs, and some mid-quality do also. If your DVD player does not have the 5.1 output, (FR, FL, RR, RL,CR, SW) you will need a receiver for TRUE 5.1 sound. Any 5.1 surround needs something to process and seperate the different channels, whether it's built in to the DVD player or through a receiver.
