In some cases you can believe someone when they say they are not depressed but, in a lot of cases, you can't. Speaking from experiance, on the end that needed help, it was very hard for my husband and loved ones to convince me to get help. I had all the classic signs- sleeping all day,not sleeping at night, not eating, neglecting myself. I wouldn't leave my house or for that matter, my room and my phone was always off the hook or I wouldn't answer.

When first confronted by my family I became angry because I knew ' I didn't have a problem'. They stayed close by and tried to be supportive and loving through my mood swings and adult temper tantrums(in one form or another) and they gave me someone to talk to when I was ready.
Eventually, when I was left alone for some quiet time, I broke down and admitted(to myself), that I really did need help. Just be supportive and let your loved one know how much you love him/her. Just asking this question shows your concern. Maybe you can convince him/her to at least be evaluated. In the mean time there is a wonderful web site that will answer questions that you didn't know you had, it will have support for you and the depressed person:
    walkers.org
You will find help for depression, bipolar disorder and much more. Good luck.

You need to show a lot of love and support. It takes time as the depressed person doesn't know they are depressed or just won't admit it. I speak from experience, it took four years for me to seek help, now I am fine and full of positivity!

But please, be aware if the depressed person is all of a sudden happy, it will usually indicate they have made the awful decision of ending their life.
