Why can't Detroit, ( or any other automaker for that matter ), make a light duty full size pickup truck, ( or ute ), that gets 30 miles to the gallon?

They can. In fact, they can make them that get even more than that, but it would require replacing the steel chassis with one fabricated from aluminium. An all-aluminium chassis would reduce the weight of the vehicle sufficiently to increase the fuel economy to more than triple and it would also pass safety standards imposed by Western governments – but it would increase the cost of the vehicle by US$50,000.
