In our country, there is something called "The honourable, honest, male public service employee" (lat. Honourus Upstandicus).

This mythical creature is said to carry out his tasks as defined by the public charter and succeeds in those tasks. He takes the agreed time for lunch & coffee breaks, calls back when he says he will, doesn't steal any post-it notes, pens or other stationery and doesn't spend time fornicating with members of the opposite sex while we are paying for it.

He hasn't been seen often in the past 25 years as he carries similar markings to the majority of the malingering public service work force and thus he is camouflaged in the morass of faceless and featureless government building landscape. On occasion, however, he can be spotted nestled amongst the cacophony of bone-idle and liberty taking staff, all over the country's public service offices.

You'll know when you come across him, for he will have a noticeable spark about him, which you will feel as an honest, vibrant energy and that marks him out from his plain-vanilla co-workers.

Treasure these moments should they occur in your lifetime, for they will be rare and sometimes fleeting and when you return,as you will, to dealing with denigrating jerks, you will look back at those magical encounters with an elevated sigh....

We have Bigfoot. Some people believe in him. He is a very tall hairy creature with an unusual odor that is emitted in his presence. He lives in very large forested areas. He is not dangerous but lives on nuts roots and berries. We also have many ghost, evil spirit stories. The American Indians have stories about people who can who can change themselves into animals (shapeshifting), but not necessarily to do negative things, more to heal or to escape from danger. We also have stories about Extraterrestrials that come from other planets and sometimes do scary things (people believe in them). Vampires - people who live forever by biting other people and sucking their blood. I hope this answers your question.

There's the Loch Ness monster, a plesiosaur type creature with the magical ability to attract fat tourists who promptly empty their wallets in the bric a brac shops on the shore.

The haggis, a creature with two long legs and two short legs, allowing it to run on the hillside.

There was also an urban myth that there was a half man half goat in the local graveyard, encountered by a guy who lived about two doors away. He was always a bit stoned, but turned chalk white when asked about it. (wooooooo)

EDIT- Not taking the piss out of Scotland Scotnix, I live there myself, a good Weegie born and bred, Cambuslang to be exact, where u from?

well in scotland we have quite a few...

1.BOOBRIE - a water bird that haunts lakes and salt wells

2.BROWNIE - good natured, invisible elves which live in country dwellings and can become attached to those who live within the homes, so much so that they perform tasks wilst they sleep and if the should move house even to another continent they will move with them.

3.FACHAN - an ugly creature from the western highlands it has 1 leg, 1 arm and 1 eye.

4.GHILLIE DHU - scottish elf who lives in birches their clothes are woven from leaves and moss.

5.KELPIE - treacherous water devil which lurkes in lakes and rivers, usually assumes the shape of a young horse. tired travellers would see the horse climb apon it and the kelpie would dive into the water drowning its victum.

6.STORM KELPIE(the blue men of minch) - they occupy the streach of water between lewis and mainland scotland looking for sailors to drown and stricken boats to sink.

7.RED CAP - a thoroughly evil creature. he is a short stocky old man with long gray hair and claws instead of hands, he also wears iron boots. he lives in ancient castle ruins particulary those with a bloody history. he wears a red cap(hence his name) which is soaked in the blood of his victums. he has remarkable speed and can overcome the strongest man. the only way to stop him is to quote a few words from the bible.

8.SCOTIA- the primodial goddess in which scotland was named, often she is depicted as an old hag with tusks.

9.SELKIE - they are shy marine creatures somewhat like a seal which are found near orkney and shetland. a female can shed her skin and come ashore as a beautiful woman but if a man found her skin he could force her to be a good yet somewhat sad wife unless she finds her skin she cannot return to the sea. the males are responsible for storms and sinking ships as their way of avenging the hunting of seals.

10.SHELLYCOAT - scottish bogeyman who haunts rivers and streams. he loves to mislead wanderers and he is covered in shells which rattle giving away his presence. he is playful but harmless.

11.SEONAIDH(shonny)- a water spirit who had to be offered ale.

12.CU SITH - a fairy hound around the size of a collie but with a smaller head, no eyes and is self illuminating.

13.BEAST OF BANFF - a large black cat like animal which has been sited many times over the past 10 years or so the last sighting of the beast was 03 febuary 2009 in montcoffer woods it is said that it is the same beast from bodmin moor that has come to banffshire.

here is a link to youtube where there is a video of the beast of banff

They have some pretty big mosquitoes in New Jersey and on Long Island, but, if report of their ancestry is true, they have degenerated in size and voracity; for the grandfather of all mosquitoes used to live in the neighborhood of Fort Onondaga, New York, and sallying out whenever he was hungry, would eat an Indian or two and pick his teeth with their ribs. The red men had no arms that could prevail against it, but at last the Holder of the Heavens, hearing their cry for aid, came down and attacked the insect. Finding that it had met its match, the mosquito flew away so rapidly that its assailant could hardly keep it in sight. It flew around the great lake, then turned eastward again. It sought help vainly of the witches that brooded in the sink-holes, or Green Lakes (near Jamesville, New York), and had reached the salt lake of Onondaga when its pursuer came up and killed it, the creature piling the sand into hills in its dying struggles.

As its blood poured upon the earth it became small mosquitoes, that gathered about the Holder of the Heavens and stung him so sorely that he half repented the service that he had done to men. The Tuscaroras say that this was one of two monsters that stood on opposite banks of the Seneca River and slew all men that passed. Hiawatha killed the other one. On their reservation is a stone, marked by the form of the Sky Holder, that shows where he rested during the chase, while his tracks were until lately seen south of Syracuse, alternating with footprints of the mosquito, which were shaped like those of a bird, and twenty inches long. At Brighton, New York, where these marks appeared, they were reverentially renewed by the Indians for many years.

Here in Puerto Rico: The Chupacabras or "Goat Sucker". It is supposed to be some unknown creature that kills animals and farm birds. Some people say they may be packs of stray dogs or monkeys that were illegally introduced and are now looking or food.

This may not be in my country but it is close enough.

The story of Beddgelert, real tragedy or urban myth?
(Beddgelert = The Grave of Gelert)
Beddgelert has been described as "a few dozen hard grey houses ... huddled together in some majestic mountain scenery". Just south of Snowdon, the village owes its fame to a story guaranteed to upset practically everyone. In ancient days, Prince Llewelyn ap Iorwerth decided on a hunting trip and left his infant son in the charge of his faithful dog Gelert. On his return, the prince was greeted by Gelert and Llewelyn noticed first that the dog's muzzle was soaked in blood and then that his precious child was nowhere to be seen. In a frenzy Llewelyn attacked the dog which fell to the ground, covered in blood. Within minutes, however, he heard a cry and stumbled through nearby bushes only to find his son, safe in his cradle. Beside the cradle lay the body of a giant wolf covered with wounds, the result of a fight to the death with hound Gelert. Llewelyn strode back to his faithful dog which licked his hand as it quietly expired.

Dog lovers will be relieved to know that this story is a complete fabrication, put about in the nineteenth century. Some say that local traders were responsible, in an attempt to lure Snowdon's visitors to their village. It is thought that the place name actually refers to Celert, a sixth century saint from the area. The "Legend of the dog" was "known to most people" by the time George Borrow visited Beddgelert in 1854 as part of the journey through the country he published in 1862 as Wild Wales. "The tomb, or what is said to be the tomb, of Gelert stands in a beautiful meadow just below the precipitous side of Cerrig Llan: it consists of a slab lying on its side, and two upright stones. It is shaded by a weeping willow, and is surrounded by a hexagonal paling. Who is there acquainted with the legend, whether he believes that the dog lies beneath these stones or not, can visit them without exclaiming with a sigh "Poor Gelert!".

The story of the faithful hound is in fact an example of an international folk tale and is known in the literature of various countries. An early Welsh version of such a folk tale is to be found in the Mabinogion (see note on Charlotte Guest and her translation). The central plot of Culhwch and Olwen (c.1100) illustrates the folk tale of the hero who sets out to marry the daughter of an exalted person - in this case a giant, but he could have been a king. Previous suitors have failed to complete strenuous tests set by the father and have been killed for their temerity but Culhwch enlists the help of companions with magical skills to attain his goal.

George Borrow calls the valley of Gelert "a wondrous valley - rivalling for grandeur and beauty any vale either in the Alps or Pyrenees". A more recent visitor e-mailed to tell us about "the lovely village with the best ice cream parlour for miles around" (maybe that should be "the only ice cream parlour for miles around"). Sounds well worth a visit.
