Hi. I am Irish and I have been living in France for 21 years. My wife, who is French, and for whom I came to France, left me in 2000, and we have three girls now 20 17 13. I love my girls but I want to go back home to Ireland. Am I a bad father?

nope... I wouldn't have even gone to france in the first place. you can not let a woman who left you hold you captive because she had your babies.

That would not make you a bad father. How you continue contact and interaction with your children after you return to Ireland (and they you) will determine that. (You changed the question a bit from when I first saw it... You ended with a broken sentence similar to "My wife believes this to be so".) The question is and should be more what your children think? Your children are old enough to understand - even the 13yo. Talk to THEM about it, and find out what THEY think. And don't worry too much about what the woman who left you thinks.

the teen age years are tricky. i'd try to stay around a little longer for the 13 & 17 year old. Don't forget when you move to a different country, you won't be able to see them often. does that bother YOU?

The fact that you are have shown how concerned about their welfare proves you aren't a bad father. Surely there is some way you can have the children visit for significant periods, during holidays and such. My son is separated from his wife and daughter, but they don't seem to have any problems with sharing. He lives in Sweden, and she lives in London.

Why don't you sit down with the girls and ask them how THEY feel about it. That's a better gauge on how they will feel about going out of their way to see YOU if you move.

I have read all the comments and I have come to the conclusion from what you have told me that you should MOVE ON AND OUT. You have laid a good foundation with your children and they will always love you. Good Luck & may God bless!
