  • I have been paying into world vision for years. The question maybe should be when are those nations governments going to take action. Because for thirty years that I know of money has been pumped into certain countries.
  • You can't help where you are or who are you, so there's no need to feel guilty. We just need to give up this illusion that consumers can change things by buying different products - it's so widespread, but it falls apart so easily when you think about it. Public relations firms, via advertising, set trends, not consumers. If you want to help these people, get political and get violent. Protest rallies are hopelessly one sided - if they're 'escorted' by police with batons and riot shields, I don't see why protestors can't bring along their own clubs and shields. It's ridiculous, we need to show these rich idiots who's boss.
  • Every person in those 3rd world countries is chaffing at the bit to be sucked into that 1st world economy, and would be even happily consumeristic (even more than any of you) given the chance.
  • I struggle every day with finances so no.. I am not ashamed. I cant even afford health insurance and am barely able to make my rent every month.
  • Not at all because I'm not. I'm not someone who loves to shop, buy, get more toys, buy more clothes, etcetera and so forth ad infinitum. I don't worship at the altar of "celebrity" and try to emulate these people..either by dressing like them or acting like them or valuing whatever the heck it is they value. I don't stand in line to be among the first to have the newest state-of-the-art thingie..I never showered my kid with toys then(when he was a little guy) or now. I'm the worst enemy of consumer shills. So no..I don't feel ashamed of myself at all..not retroactively, nor do I expect to in the future! :) Happy Thursday! :)
  • I spend considerable time, money and effort helping to feed the hungry in the US. I mentor young women in Appalachia and have for many years. I don't feel ashamed at all. I grew up in a family of extremely modest means. I had only the children that I could afford. I worked very hard and I am reaping the rewards of that now. Third world nations should encourage the same and take care of their own. I don't feel guilty for the corruption of their governments. That's on them.
  • I think our first world economy SUCKS for so many people here! No economy is perfect, but this one needs a lot of upgrades.
  • I volunteer in my community. I spend almost nothing on consumer goods because I am not materialistic. What do YOU do to help the people in your community, if I may ask?
  • I don't buy a lot of toys, and I've got money problems, same as everybody. BUT! I do consider myself very lucky. I am one of the chosen few people on this planet that can get my hands on a steak. When that happens, I bite the hell out of 'em.
  • No, I feel very fortunate and blessed to live in a country that provides opportunity. I do feel very sad for those less fortunate and if I let myself think about it too much I get depressed and feel quite helpless.
  • If all the resources of the world were distributed equally, there still would not be enough to feed everyone at the current population. Each person on earth would get the equivalent of two bowls of rice a day. We need a reduction in population, and we need it now.
