Only certain species of flies actually feed on blood meals. For example the Sarcophaga(flesh flies) are commonly found going after cattle. Bites are extremely painful, and their mouthparts are adapted with sort of a scissor type end, that tears at flesh to produce a hole that it can feed from.
A fruit fly landed on my apricot mango yogurt, and I didn't realize it was there until after I put a spoonful in mouth. Perhaps I'll die?
