  • Wow, you're not absorbing your studies at all, I see. Simone de Beauvoir was a woman.
  • Simone De Beauvoir was a woman existential philosopher in the early 20th century. She spent lots of time with Jean-Paul Sarte, another french exisentialist. Existentialism is basically a philosophy that says that life is without intrinsic meaning, that "Existence precedes essence," and that we must create our own meaning so that we do not fall into despair and a forlorn state. If we apply this to "being a woman," then Beauvoir's comment makes perfect sense. She's saying that you are not born with the characteristics of a woman, other than the physical characteristics. You must create the rest of yourself in a way that you think a woman should be. What a woman is is not defined by nature, God, or anything else before birth. You are thrust into existence void of meaningful characteristics and must decide in each moment what kind of woman you want to be. You must also define what it means to you to be a woman.
