Before the advent of intensive farming, how long did a pig live before it was put to slaughter?

A year or less. That really didn't change a whole lot. What did change was the quality of life in that year. Of course, when pigs ran loose to fatten in the woods until slaughter, it wasn't all that uncommon for a bear or panther to slaughter them first. But then as now, the most common way for a pig to die is in the first couple of days by being bitten or laid on by its mother.
