Help answer this question below.
The expert rating is based on an average of ratings received for your answers in any given category. If you routinely get rated useful, you will eventually be listed as an expert.
I think it means you have answered and been well rated on questions in that category.
The strange thing is that most of us are not even interested in the categories we are supposed to be expert in
If there isn't one yet, you need to have at least 5 answers to individual questions and at least 25 points from those answers. If there is already an expert, you need to also have more points from those answers than they do.
Give a lot of helpful answers on that topic. If you've put enough effort into it to beat the previous expert, at the next count, you'll be made an expert.

You must have five RATED answers, and those ratings, when added up, must be at least 25 points.
So, if you have 10 answers under 1 category, and only 1 of your answers is rated, you won't be the category expert there, even if your one rated answer has 1,000 points.
But if you have 5 answers with ratings of just 1, 1, 1, 1, and 26, then you will be the expert in that category (provided that no other user has more points there)
I have read all the answers here and no one has accurately explained just how you become an expert in a category. Here it is plain and simple.
You have to be the person to receive the most points in a particular category based upon the points you received solely from your answers. Any points you earned from posting a question in the same category do not count to you point total that is used to determine whether someone is an expert or not.
The rational is that how can someone be an expert based upon the questions they posted. A proof of expertise is the knowledge one possesses and that can only be exemplified in one's answers.
If you are the first one to have at least 5 answers and have earned 25 or more points in a category that did not nave an expert beforehand, you will then be the first expert in that category after the categories have been updated.
To become an expert, you answer the catagory questions correctly and frequently.
You need to have answered at least 5 questions and gained more points than the current expert. If there is no expert yet, you need to have answered 5 questions and gotten a minimum of 25 points form those answers.
Answer all the questions thacome in on that category and get the most points.
You must have at least five answers (under a certain category) with points, and the total points must be at least 25.
So, if got 25 points for 1 answer under a certain category, you don't become an expert of that category. But if you got 21 points for 1 answer and 1 point for 4 other answers, then you become an "expert." But of course, you only become an expert when no other user has more points than you in that category.
Answer a lot of questions in that category and get lots of points for answering them.
You must concentrate on that particular category. As far as I know, there is only one expert for a particular category. I was never an expert in any category.
For the details, look at Galeanda's anwer.
To explore a category, it is better to use the category view. For instance, here is the view for the category "Categories » Answerbag » About Categories":

Going by my expert list you become an expert by knowing just about NOTHING about certain subjects but people give you points for your ignorance, or out of pity and you land up having so many faux points suddenly you are a category expert
Well first, you have to spend hours, days, weeks, and months putting the effort into it here on AB, it does not happen overnight, but Trotsky put it to ya right.
You have to be the person with the highest number of points in that category.
By getting more points than anyone else in that subject.
Tip: Please check for duplicate questions before you ask.
You become a category expert when you have earned more points than anyone else on one particular category. :)

You can add that to what Antigone said.
Ask a lot of good questions in that category. Answer a lot of questions in that category with good answers. The person listed as the category expert is the person with the highest score in that category.
Well, really you need to get a lot of good ratings in a certain catagory. Some you expect, some are just out of the blue. My advice is just keep answering questions as good as you can, and you'll be well on your way!
Get a really good rating in questions in that category.
You answered MANY questions in a said category, and once you are found correct or are accredited with accurate answers, you might just have a chance at being a cat(egory) expert.
You get the most points in a category by answering a shit ton of questions.
You just need to be given the most points in a category.
You get points for your answers in the section and they add up, and when you have the most in that section you're labeled an expert.
Correct me if I'm wrong anyone, but I think points received for a question you ask in a section don't count, it's only the points for the answers you give that do.
You must have answered at least five questions under a certain category, and those answers must be rated, and the total points for all of them must be at least 25.
For example, if you get 25 points for one answer under a certain category and you get 0 for the other four answers, you won't get an expert title. But if you get 20, 2, 1, 1 and 1, then you will be an "expert."
Of course, you will only be the "expert" if it's you who has the highest points in that category.

That's not how experts are decided. It is by having a minimum of 5 answers with at least 25 points or more points than the peson who is an expert.

That's interesting - you obviously mean in that specific category, right?
