Does it really matter if it's racist? I think what's important is how one chooses to respond to immature comments designed to elicit an equally immmature response. Best to forget about it.

No. I just find that the use of the word, no matter in what context, is offensive. So even if someone says "Gee, those gumballs are big niggers!" I don't like hearing the word used.

Yes, it is. The word is racist, because it is a hateful racist word. The general rule seems to be that if the group the word describes uses it, it's ok because it is that group's way of trying to diffuse the cultural impact of the word within their own community. However, when used by outsiders for any purpose, it is a negative hateful word that has caused damage and suffering to the intended group and should thus not be used for any purpose whatsoever, regardless of context.

I do not think it is racist unless the intent behind calling them that is to insult them. Usually it seems to be a "cool" thing. Frankly, I think it is very silly.

I think the word is racist in general. No matter if you said it in a room full of people or in a room all by yourself. People have gotten lax over the last few years and play fast and loose with the social rules and racial slurs but... Bottom line, its a racist word, it just IS.
