  • Interesting question. Just a guess, mind you, but I'd say data is just facts. Information would be facts applied purposefully. Take a car GPS unit, for example. Within that little box, there's data or programming that means nothing when the unit is off. Turn it on and that data or programming translates images in such a way that it informs a driver where he is and/or how he might get to a desired destination. *NOTE: One definition at www.dictionary.com for "data" is "fact or piece of information". I beg to differ. A fact is hardly informative if (a) you don't understand what the fact means, or (b) a fact is used inappropriately i.e. to misinform.
  • information is deciphered by a brain and data is deciphered by a process created by a brain
  • Data is raw numbers and figures. Information is data that has been processed in some way to make it useful and meaningful to the observer. For example: My goals this season - 1 1 2 3 1 0 2 0 2 1 3 1 1 2 3 4 1 3 7 4 1 2 is a set of numbers, data. Is it useful? Not really. But if I process it I can say Average = 2.04 Sum = 45 Highest = 7 Lowest = 0 Median = 2 Or I can stick it on a graph versus time and watch how I progress. I can find a line of best fit to see if I'm progressing or not. All these things can be done to turn dull data into interesting information.
