I'm not sure I understand you. Do you mean to ask how to draw a vertical line passing through the apex of a triangle? If so: Let's assume that your triangle has the base horizontal and the apex at the top. From the apex, use your compasses to mark two points on the base, equidistant from the apex. (You might need to extend the base line.) From these two points, draw intersecting equal-radius curves below the base. Now draw your vertical from where these curves cross to the apex.

If you are using anything but a right-triangle then you are going to have to use trigonometry. You simply use the Pythagorean Theorem, which states that side one squared plus side two squared will equal the hypotenuse squared. Manipulate this equation to serve your specific problem.

yeahh..that one guy is right i think, im in geometry and i knew it had something to do with Pythagoren Theorem. The formula is a squared + b squared = c sqared and c will be your hypotenuse. But i do have a question too..is c squared your altitude then??
