Better wash out your ears, if you thought you heard that in a documentary. Montreal is Canada's second largest city. Common sense would tell you that's impossible.

Actually he`s not all that wrong. It`s annual tradition that most leases go from July 1st to July 1st and most people move this day. Montréal is just nuts for these few days, there is stuff littered all over the streets and renting a truck or getting movers is virtually impossible.

That's just moving day, not a big deal. It's just when the majority of leases end, so it can be a little crazy. Good free furniture if you're moving into somewhere, though.

well you see, it's the only day of the year that the igloos thaw enough to get the chesterfield out the front door...

I do recall a documentary on moving day....as for why? I don't know....school is out....a couple days off? I know june24th is also holiday, but that's drinking day....might be because Canada day isn't that big in the province.....

This is a Great question. Moving day is July 1st when MOST leases are up. But there are other times (May & Sept) that moves happen as well. These are mostly Students. Yes the city could be a mad house. Yes the city is littered with Garbage. Yes its nearly impossible to get a moving truck. Yes there is loads of Juggling with apartemnts and timing is vital. I am not sure if Montreal choose this day because Its Canada Day. But it seems to work for us. Its a Holiday off work so that helps.

There was a documentary made up of this. Many years ago, leases used to end on many different days in many different months. The government in Quebec decreed that all leases would be extended to the 30th of June in order to standardize the leases with the school year. This was done to ensure that students didn't need to travel long distances from their local school. It cut down on the problem of children moving from one school district to another and simplified many other things. There is nothing in the law that requires a lease to end on the 30th of June. And it certainly has no bearing on house sales. But it has managed to simply some problems and create others (the problem with renting a van to move).

I wouldn't call a city of 3 million a ''town''...but I digress. July 1st (Canada Day) IS the day where most leases are up, or renewed. For many Québecers i.e. sovereignists, Canada Day has little or no importance to them (apart from the fact that it it a national holiday)and the perfect summer day to get together with friends, have beers and MOVE. It just happens that way. The bonehead who dreamt-up that bonkers dictat is THE ENTIRE POPULATION, THROUGH YEARS. It's just a way we do things in our town. Deal with it...oh...and...please stay away, our ''ways'' seem to annoy you.

There is one reason... Canada Day is on July 1st, french people in Montreal who are for the majority separatist don't want to celebrate this day for some reasons... they decided then to move on that day... No joke, Vive le Québec libre !!!
