When i breastfed my son it took me forever and a day to express milk into a bottle despite buying a very expensive pump,i think i was giving about 5-6 fl oz.

My 4 month old baby eats 4 to 5 oz of breastmilk every 2 to 3 hours and he is gaining weight at the appropriate rate. My doctor says he has great nutrition. He just recently started waking up during the night around 4 a.m. and my doctor said I can try to start him on cereal at night.

I had the same question. My baby nurses at 5am for about 35 minutes. I pump at 6am before I leave to work and I get about 3-4 oz. Then he drinks 4 oz bottles of breast milk in a bottle about every 3 hours, sometimes he only waits for 2 1/2 hrs. I have used up all my stored milk and now it seems like a lot of work to get enough for his bottles for the next day. Should I be pumping at night to build up my supply? I pump 3 times at work for about 10-15 minutes and get about a total of 11 ozs. This is not enough for the next day. When I get home from work, he eats about every 2 1/2- 3hrs. When I try to pump after I nurse in the evening, I can barely get an ounce. How can I build up my supply?

I actually just asked my dr. that question because I was discussing it with my mother. The dr. said that 4oz bottles are just fine. If she is hungry let her eat but start with 4oz. and give her/him a little time after she/he eats to see if she/he is still hungry. Trust me she/he will let you know. Most likely 4oz are just fine when they are breastfeeding.

THE BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK says 2-2.5 ounces per pound of body weight per 24hours. This is for the healthy, well-gaining baby. An additional 1-2 ounces per pound may be needed for slow gaining babies.

Think about the size of your babies stomach which is the size of his/her fist. Some babies can handle a little more or less. You have to figure that out. I would try 3 oz every 3 hours and see how the baby reacts. The babies don't always tell you when they are full. My daughter, at 2 months old was eating 4-5 oz and she was suffering from colic and reflux. When I lowered the amount she was eating she stopped fussing as much. The colic remained though the reflux almost disappeared. She also stopped spitting up as much.

This is something that you and your baby need to figure out.

I never breast fed, so do not have an answer. I do know when the baby is hungry, give him or her the bottle and they will let you know when they have had enough. Maybe call your Pediatrician and ask..
