  • it's not necessarily racist, not on purpose anyways. most people do think of Jesus as white, and most portraits of him depict him as white. however, given the place he was born, the odds of him actually being white are slim to none. sometime in history he was drawn as white, and it became the standard, at least in predominantly white countries. most Christians looking at the images today won't connect being white with holiness, it is just the standard to see him drawn that way. that being said, anyone who refuses to consider the notion that Jesus was not white is ignorant.
  • People draw him as like themselves. In Africa he is often shown as black. Though, when you trace back the conventional Western church image of Jesus, the earlier ones very obviously descend from images of the Roman god Apollo. Given that there were no actual images of Jesus, people chose the most symbolically appropriate images around them.
  • I do know He was from the middle east(North Africa) and He was a carpenter,Dont think He hung alot of dry wall inside back then,so He was a darker skin Man because it was hot,He worked outside alot and the people of that region were dark skin.

  • It's funny but I've also never seen a picture of a black or fat Jesus, why do you suppose that is?
  • I think most people think of Christ as being like themselves. As they are created in God's image, they want to create Christ in their own image. Also, many of the famous portraits of Christ by European artists were created when Europe was very homogenous and the artist may never have seen someone of another race. Only the crusaders and explorers may ever have been outside of Europe. You can't exactly judge people of other eras by modern standards. For Americans, we see people of other races all the time. Even in Europe, with the collapse of the colonial system, there are beginning to be many people of other races. But did Michaelangelo ever see someone of another race? I don't know. He was in the Meditterrenean, so he may have. But it was a long walk to Jerusalem and after the fall of the Roman Empire, it would have been a difficult and dangerous walk. The reality is, Jesus was a Jew and a descendant of Abraham, who came from modern-day Iraq and probably looked similar to anyone from that region.
  • Jesus is Jewish. He looked like a Jewish man.
  • Just to blow this myth that jesus looked like a hippy. jay leno mentioned on his show, "recent studies show that Jesus may have had mutton chops" :)
  • The Bible reports that Jesus was of Jewish descent and while he was on earth he preached to 'the house of Israel'. Apparently, he 'blended in' with the crowds, since the Pharisees needed Judas to identify him for them. (He did so with a kiss, as you know.) This also indicates, that there was no 'halo' around his head as some artwork depicts.
