She remembers when I let her walk home with me from school...even though I wanted to talk to my girlfriend alone. And she knows she was never bullied or pestered by any boys because brother Tom would kick their butts.

About 15 years ago I got a complete meal--soup, salad, main dish and tea--at a Ukrainian cafe for two cents. This was because the economy was making the changeover from a Communist one in which there was an effective (though hidden) income tax rate of about 99%, and then the government subsidized things they thought you should have, like a dollar-a-year apartment rent, two cents for a cafe meal, and other crazy things. When we brought actual money--hard currency--into that system, we got the subsidies but hadn't paid the 99% taxes and everything was cheap for us. In the course of time most prices here have caught up with world prices.
