  • Beagles are 63 days plus or minus a couple of days. I wouldn't imagine other breeds are much different. A couple of days before she whelps, she'll start looking for or making a nest. When she starts labor, you'll see ripples going down her sides. She'll be restless, sometimes they spin around the whelping box backwards. As labor progresses, they'll lick their vulvas a lot. Sometimes they'll yelp or cry as the pup goes under the pelvic arch. The best thing you can do is provide a warm safe place for a nest and stay out of the way. Too much attention can cause a mother dog extra stress and even make her reject the pups. Just leave her alone and keep an eye on her from a distance. The only time you should step in is if she doesn't produce a pup within a few hours of going into labor. At that point you get her to the vet. You also spring into action if the pup doesn't break through the sack on its own or if mom doesn't break it promptly. After the pups are born, keep an eye out that they are all nursing and getting milk. Keep an eye on mom to make sure she doesn't spike a fever in the first few days.
