I had the same exact thing happen on my Gateway 30" LCD panel. At first I thought it was a firmware bug and I'd power cycle the monitor to get rid of it. Finally, I figured out that when that happened, I had accidentally put the monitor in PiP (Picture-in-Picture) mode, and the second video input had nothing connected, so I just got a black rectangle. Check your remote, and see if you can figure out how to get it out of PiP mode. Or, if all else fails, read the manual ;-)

Yeah.. You are getting some kind of logic error where the remote is sending a command, the TV may be receiving it, but its logic, instead of giving you a message merely shows the black box without a message. That is why it disappears after a short period of time. If you still have warranty I would get it fixed.

I found the same problem with my JVC. It seems someone had turned on the closed caption option. Turned it off, and the black box is gone!
