Since graphic designing requires both creativity and technical skills, a degree is usually needed to land a job as a graphic artist. Graphic designers are employed by corporations, marketing firms, small enterprises, publishing and media companies, etc. They work on designing a broad range of products such as websites, television graphics, corporate reports, marketing brochures, newspapers, journals or magazines, interactive media, multimedia projects, etc. To undertake such high level designing work, you need to have skills in various design software. Check out the graphic design degree offered by California College San Diego (http://www.cc-sd.edu/graphic-design-degree.html), which teaches software such Photoshop, Javascript, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver along with principles of typography, desktop publishing, Internet Management, etc.
