Why do monks take a vow of silence?

    According to this article, monks have chosen a vow of silence to "empty oneself in order to allow the Word of God to flower within."

    monks and nuns do this...its a catholic thing.....it may be to help them move closer to God .keeps down strife and gossip. and an endurance test they have to endure.....who knows.?

    monks vow to live in silence because they like the taste of hamburgers and like to be bald because they would be too hot with hair and they think it looks better
