Response from Richard Rosenblatt, CEO of DemandMedia:

What we learned from Myspace is that user-generated content could be a tremendous opportunity, and users use it, bring their friends, and you can build an entire media company for very little cost. What has occurred is the phenomenon with Myspace or Facebook is that these appeal to a specific demographic, teens or college, but the demographic is growing, with enormous growth in thirty plus age range, and you see the entire web universe wants to be creative. So what we’re focusing on is enthusiastic verticals. There’s a lot of opportunities so we want to focus on specific areas. We acquired Trails.com and we’ll be having people who are enthuastic about hiking and outdoors sports connected and communicating with each other. It’s less about sharing pictures and more about sharing information.

We’re a bottoms up media company. We let users determine what verticals they’re enthusiastic about, and that determines programming. We use a suite of tools, the three systems that allows users to automatically publish, so you can publish an article on how to make a great margarita, how to fix a leaky pipe. E-How is a site we acquired where everyone can be an expert on something, so you should write and article about it and let users talk about it. So eventually you’ll be able to publish and get paid for producing this kind of content.
