If the fact that what is now Israel was the ancient home of the Jewish people can be used to justify establishing and maintaining Israel as a modern nation, shouldn't North America be handed back over to the Native American tribes who first lived there?

wasn't it in the balfour agreement following ww1 that great britain established that it would gradually turn the Jewish homelands over to the Jewish people after the palestinians had lived there 3,000 years. while the UN might've cited the desire to prevent their genocide again, history suggests that other factors contributed to the establishment of Israel. Given your premise, which i agree with, then the USA ought to return much of the land or compensate appropriately the Native Americans. the problem that i have with your premise is that you assume that there is a just world, which, i'm afraid, you'll find that it is not. maybe you and i can make it a little more just.

If the premise you presented were accurate, that would indeed be the case. (The cultural genocide our ancestors committed is appalling, and we continue to pay for it culturally and fiscally to this very day) However, my understanding of the UN policy of establishing Israel as a homeland for the Jews stemmed from a rather noble (in my opinion) post-Holocaust idea that the Jews ought to have a place to call their own in order to help insure that they were never subjected to genocide again. It was not primarily the fact that it belonged to there predecessors.
