    On early keyboards, the arrow keys, along with home, end, page up/down, were found only as secondary functions of the numeric keypad, and thus it was important to be able to easily switch the keypad between the two functions. Today's keyboards have separate buttons for all of these functions, so there's no reason to turn num lock off any more.

    Num lock enables the use of the number/arthematic symbol pad to the left.

    it also lets you use the numberpad on your keyboard or some sillyness like that.
