honestly to tell the truth about this i know people who have their tongue pierced, and the tooth chipping is reduced by not rubbing the ball against the back of your teeth and using the acrylic balls instead of steel ones.
as for the injuries, anyone can get any piercing material and pretty much start piercing people you have to do checks on the person who's doing the piercing, like the person who im going to this Saturday is licensed in the medical field and has been doing this for years.
don't go to an amateur and research before you do and you can avoid most if not all of the bad things that come with any piercing, not only a tongue piercing!

Tooth fracture, nerve damage, aspiration of jewelry, infection, speech impediment. There is also the possibility of it hitting the lingual artery, a significant artery that runs through the tongue. If this artery is nicked during the piercing, it could swell up and block the airway and, ultimately, kill someone.

yes the steel bars and screwballs damage the enamel if you intend to have a piercing and are concerned then i suggest you opt for plastic.

I've had my toungue pierced for
Three years now and just from it being
In my mouth it has caused significant
damage to the front bottom teeth
And gums by it rubbing on my
gums over the year and while at night
while I'm sleeping and I got it
done by a profeesinal that had been
piercing for 7 years he did it far
Enough back but I went to the
Dentist today and my gum Is completely
rubbed away and it will never
Grow back and he gets lots of
    Patients with that problem alot
and they usuallly lose there front
Two bottom teeth because there is
No gums left to hold them in...
so I decided to take mytounge
    Ring out...
having a tounge ring is kool
    But it's not worth losing
Your teeth and it also depends
    on the person....some people could
go on forever with one and never
    problem...but some can't...
    so just be careful..

Yes, chipped and broken teeth are a risk. Consider acrylic jewelry; you can bite through them with your teeth, and it will hurt, but the stud or ball will break before your tooth does. Research piercists, visit a studio; medical certification is more and more common and is becoming legally required in some state. Check for a prominently displayed business license, and membership with the Better Business Bureau. Any piercist worth their own metal will be happy to talk to you about their style, their training, their equipment, etc. When getting a piercing, they should show you an unopened, sterilized needle that they unwrap in front of you; they should wash their hands in front of you, then put gloves on where you can see them. They won't touch anything except the needle, and if they do touch anything else they should remove gloves, and wash hands again, and so on. Ask what sort of after-care instructions they provide. They should be concerned about the health of the piercing, and encourage you to come in or contact them if you have problems.

I got my tongue pierced 10 years ago and have never had any trouble at all. It's easy to take care of, if you're dilligent.
