Is it wrong of me to NOT want to go to college? I just got my GED (with an almost perfect score) and I'm 16, and I honestly don't feel like that's what would be the best for me right now, despite all the people pressuring me to go to one.

The best reason not to go to college is because you have something BETTER to do. That is what is missing from your question. Bill Gates didn't become the richest man in the country because of college, he became the richest man because he dropped out and started Microsoft instead. You will still need to educate yourself even if you don't go to college, or you can plan on a pretty dull and poor existence. How will you do that? If you have a better way, that's great, I wish you luck!

I never went to college. My daughters 16 & I never cared if she went either but she helped me do my bills one day & she asked why I didn't have more money. I told her that I didn't have a degree. If you don't want to go to cllege, then don't go BUT work your butt off so you can bank money so if you want kids, you can raise them & not a babysitter

  • You go! Same here. That was one lame test. Polished it off in a couple of hours and that included a few smoke breaks. I started college and didn't finish because I (duh) decided to get married instead. I wish I had finished now. It's fab to be able to tell prospective employers that I'm like really smart and all, but it's hard to get by on a GED and no college degree.

I won't lie. I ended up with a great job that paid as much as my BF's at the time and he had a Masters Degree. Sweet. That was sheer luck though. How lucky do you feel?

It's not wrong to not want to go. I bet I can guess that you're intelligent, bored with school, and just don't see the point of being more bored in college. Correct me if I'm wrong. You shouldn't write it off though. Go. You won't regret it later.

i dont think its wrong, you should do whatever makes you happy and what you want to do, pressure from others tends to make things worse so dont rush into something that might make you unhappy.
congrats on your GED score btw :)

Wrong, maybe not. But those "pressuring" you to go to college are trying to look out for you.

Most companies are looking for people with college degrees, now-a-days. And I believe the last info was that those with a college education will make more than $1,000,000 MORE than those who don't.

Without a college education (at the VERY least an associates degree), you will find it difficult to find any job that is not manual labor - construction, factory work, miners, etc. - none of which are BAD, if you can get with the right groups and save money; or fast-food work - flipping burgers, etc. - again, not bad, if you can get into management, but you need to know accounting and business.

Of course, you could start your own business, but again, you need to know business, and maybe accounting.

The other problem with not going NOW, is that many people find life catches up to them... They get married, have kids, and feel "stuck" now, not able to find the time or money for secondary education.

NOW, while you are young and single is the BEST time to go.

Don't forget there are community and trade colleges. BE AWARE that there are rip-offs in the trades. If you decide to go to one of them, make sure at least SOME of your credits will transfer to a regular college or university. They also need to be accredited. BE AWARE that not all advertised on TV are accredited CORRECTLY. (This is one of the reasons that regular and community colleges and universities are so much better.

If you wish to put it off for a year, and work, that's a different story, entirely. Shoot at skipping a semester, and if you feel ready, you can go. If not, one more semester. Make sure you're ready for it in a year. There WILL be things you will need to do to get ready - Financial aide, figuring out WHAT you want to do, applying to many colleges (not all will accept you), SATs or whatever testing is required, etc. That ALL takes time.

Think VERY seriously about staying out ONLY for ONE semester. It will be better for you in the long run, and THAT'S why "all the people" are "pressuring" you.

Good luck. I hope you make the right decision for you. ;-)

    Tel UK- Licensed to fish!

Ok mate, What you really need to ask yourself right now is "Can I walk into a good job with my present qualifications or will I be better of with a college degree" I have always found ,as a general rule, that those with the most "bits of paper" get the best jobs.
    College can also be fun.
Wish you well with your decission,do seek advice of others ,teachers, parents ,relatives and even us on AB.
P.S. I'm in the UK, so I am assuming that a GED is something like our General Certificate of Education?

It's neither wrong not right for you to not want to go to college. That's how you feel and your feelings are valid and worth taking note of. I must say though, you really need to take some time to evaluate why you don't want to go to college.

Life's expensive. You really have no idea how much things cost until you're a bit older.

One day you're going to have to be responsible for yourself - pay for things like - a car, its insurance, its maintenance, its gas, your medical bills like the doctor and dentist, you'll have to pay rent somewhere and will also be responsible for the utilities, let's not forget expenses for food and clothing. One day you might have a family too or maybe you'll want to travel... you're going to need a career that will afford you the lifestyle you wish to have.

Although you might not be too keen on the idea of higher education I would really challenge you to reconsider...maybe at least try one class. I'm sure you could browse your local community college's class list and find at least one subject that interests you.

Nowadays the job world is very competitive and in the past when a BA/BS might have been impressive to employers, now a Masters is where its at.

Just spend sometime envisioning what you want your life to look like in just 5 years... and know that a job that doesn't require an education past high school most likely will not pay you all that well, there are always exceptions - but there aren't a whole lot of opportunities like that out there.

You don't mention an alternative. What are your choices? You won't become emancipated until 18, so you have two years at least before you can sign a contract or work without restrictive labor laws. That limits some options. You're too young to join the military right now. Your job prospects are very limited. Why not try college at least until you get a couple years older. It certainly won't hurt and in the meantime, you might come up with some other idea that is more fascinating. College isn't for everyone.

GED at 16? that is impressive. our society has the belief that college makes you more qualified for anything. I have seen college educated managers with less managing skill than a highschool drop out.
what do you want to do? I want to be a mechanical engineer because my mind already functions like that. I actualy enjoyed a mechanical text book the way other people enjoy novels. there are 2 reasons I need to go to college. first is to put more tools in my shed, meaning learn the standards to give me short cuts when I am breaking the mold. the other is for a piece of paper to tell employers about my excelence. yes I agree it is stupid but employers would rather you have that paper than actualy be good.

so the question you need to ask yourself is "what do I want to do?" then decide if college will help you get there.

Don't go if you don't want to......I don't want to be the one to ruin your future....but if this isn't what you want, the ppl pressuring you might be ruining YOUR future, and giving you THEIR VERSION of your future....your only 16, yes you should be worrying about this stuff, but wait a bit until you get older, once you get older you'll understand why it's so important to be older....seriously

You should only go to college when you are ready. If you aren't ready now then don't waste tour time or money. Do what you know is right for you.

You are very young and you have time on your side. People are just trying to encourage you to do things to ensure your success. But you know what is right for you. Only go to college when you know you will take it seriously.
