In 2003, South Carolina's violent crime rate was 793.5 per 100,000 people while Florida was 730.4 per 100,000 (www.fbi.gov/ucr). This is the rate of the number of crimes reported to the police. The Bureau of Justice Statistics tracks data on victims of crime through a survey.

A subset of victims are victims of more than one crime. Not all victims report the crime to the police.
