Tis a mechanical issue likely the switch.
My bet is that your power supply is kaput.
On most home built machines, this is a simple and relatively cheap thing to replace (~ $30 U.S.). On an eMachines box, I'm not so sure. They may use a proprietary power supply.
Sometimes that happens to me. Have you tried taking out the battery for about 30. sec, unplugged? It usually works for me.
Yes
It could be the button
It could be something else

Lightning struck near my house last night causing my accidentally plugged in laptop to spark at the place where it was plugged in. the laptop works but refuses to charge. Is this an internal problem or a problem with the power cord?

You're reading I own a eMachines PC. When I push the power button, nothing happens. (yes, it is plugged in). Could this just be a power button problem or something else?

I too have occasionally forgotten to ensure the proper positioning of the bi-stable mechanically-actuated power mode selector device on the back of my box.

Oddly, my new box won't POST properly unless I hit that switch, hit the button, then turn the power supply back on.
