That's a good question. That idea has actually been proposed by psychologists as a way of reducing the problem of road rage. My explanation for why it hasn't already been invented is that "the finger" first existed (and still does exist) in other situations besides driving. Maybe if we had a gesture for "thank you" or "i'm sorry" to use in other everyday situations, we would use them in driving as well.

I wave to say "thank you" and if I make a mistake and nearly hit someone or something I shake my head at myself and make a pouty face.
