  • Go to the "whois" section of the nic.com website and type in the domain name. You will be surprised how much information you can gather about who owns a specific domain, particularly if the registrant is a private individual rather than a company or organisation. http://www.nic.com
  • Alternatively, if you're after an answer for a domain which doesn't fall inside of the usual .com or .org TLDs, you can search for the WHOIS results for just about any domain name using the Whois Tool at www.samspade.org . Load the page, go to the second text input box down in the list, type the domain name (without the www.) into the box, make sure it says "Magic" in the dropdown box next to it (that means the site will determine which WHOIS server it needs to use to bring back results for the domain name) and then either hit Enter or click the Whois button. The site'll go off and fetch your results. There's many online WHOIS checkers out there, but I prefer the SamSpade one for its fast, informative results, without any unnecessary clutter. You can also download a Windows programme called SamSpade from the same site, which lets you do many of the things you could do online from your own PC using the one programme. Very nifty.
  • My favorite tool for finding out domain owner information is http://whois.sc/ The nice thing about that site is that it is easy to get your answer - instead of using their search box, you can type the domain name (without the "www", which isn't actually a part of the domain name) into the path. For instance, if you wanted to know about microsoft.com, you could go to http://whois.sc/microsoft.com (That site also has some other handy things, some of which require subscriptions, but there are plenty of cool free things that don't require any sort of account - always a plus!)
  • Go to: www.register.com
