I don't think it's that you hope that something new has appeared. I think it's that you are hoping that you become more inspired by something already there and you will think of something imaginative and yummy to do with it. Like, add that leftover chicken to that leftover salad and make a new meal of it. This hope is usually in vain, though.

It's a habit. Besides, there are times when something new does show up.

haha good question! it's habit or something, like reassurance that in fact there is nothing there. school taught me to double check just in case I missed something :p

There's always stuff to eat in the fridge. With each successive trip, one becomes more desperate. Eventually, something will look appealing.

I think it's just hoping that I'll become in the mood to eat whatever is in there if I look at it often enough.

because I can't afford a $2,500 fridge with the glass infront and the factorys like GE,Maytag,Whirlpool have peeps in charge of marketing who only use the ice maker and water despenser in the front so they think thats what we want. They don't ask us just leave it up to harvard business school to do there thinking for them.

No, it's not just you. :) I don't think I really believe that something magical will appear, but my attempts to look for something good in the fridge becomes more earnest each time.

Also, I think my standards as to what I'll eat drop with repeated visits (eg.: Looking at the same tired looking apple on three separate trips before deciding: "Yeah... alright.")

Maybe you are urging for something to snack on when you really don't know what you want to eat. Could it also possibly be boredom? I used to do that too when I was a kid. lol

I think it is right up there with losing something, and searching the same places over and over. If it wasnt there the first time, what makes us think they appeared out of the blue? (such as our keys)Also when looking for something like keys why do we look in places they could NEVER possibly be, like in the fridge. Just human nature at its best :)

For the same reason they keep returning to relationships that didn't work out the first time. Hope springs eternal, regardless of what logic and common sense dictate.

Hoping something will be more appealing the second time around. Or to find something hiding behind another item.
