I don't understand why smokers often try to convince non-smokers to take up the habit. Is it just some sort of misery loving company thing, or something to help alleviate the guilt of doing something you know is bad?

I've never heard of a smoker trying to get someone to smoke. I smoke, and I agree with non smokers for not smoking and say that I shouldn't smoke either. I would never try to convince someone to do it. Unless it's a child to another child.

Never, in my life have i tried to convince someone to start smoking..i have told them the opposite do not start you will regrete it..

This happened to my wife. Her friend kept on trying to get her to try it and one night she did. Now she smokes about a half a pack a day. She does not smoke in the house or near me. Sometimes I feel like trying it with her but have not yet.

most of the people around me smoke but when im out with some1 that doesnt i will never try to make them smoke however when i light one up i offer to them as well just to be polite if the answer is no thats fine, and i dont some as much as well cuz i think they just might not like the smell or the smoke. Once reason i would like them to smoke is that i would feel more comfortable knowing its not bothering them.

Smokers have done that to me because I unconsciously suck my thumb in public and it embarrasses them, and me (sometimes). Sometimes I think I should just give in because, after all, it's far more socially acceptable than sucking my thumb as an adult.

Yeah that's stupid of them. I am a smoker and I still rarely offer cigarettes to people even if I know they might want one. I guess I try to look out for others. I used to pass them out like I was cool.

Maybe because they have to smoke outside, they want someone to go with them and if they're doing something they're not proud of, it's always easier to tell themselves it's fine if enough other people are doing it.
