  • Cultures in the ancient world encountered each iother in one of two ways. One: personally. Explorers would find "new" lands. Merchants would travel to far-off places in search of trade. Or sojourners would bring bring parts of the home they left behind into whatever culture they found themselves in. Not to mention conquerers who injected their culture into the societies they overtook. (Ahem, Hellenization?) Two: Writings. Whether they be religious writings, poetry and mythology or messages between countries, writing has always been a big part of encountering people. If you've ever founde a love letter or random poem scribbled on a peice of paper - or even if you've ever read the vandalistic writings in a bathroom stall, you know how reading another person's writing gives you an insight into the person, himself. That concept works on a cultural level as well.
