I see that everyone has added there favorite dog and other common dog breeds based the amount of sled weight they can pull or lift and ofcourse the occasional neighborhood brawl. I would think that before you answer blindly you might do a little research. I agree that all of the afor mentioned breeds are strong and tough in there specific realm of expertise but you all have left out soooooo many of the purest power, endurance, and ferocity breeds and sub breeds. There are dogs such as the Fila Brasilleiro, Cane Corso, Ca De Bou, Presa Canario, Tosa Inu. Most of these dogs are able to make short work of any Akita, Pit, or St. Bernard. These dogs were used to guard , hunt, attack, kill anything that comes near the farm , plantation or home. Such duties as tracking down and holding down animals the likes of Jaguars. The Cane Corso and Fila specifically. Don't just settle with the dogs you've heard of. Read. There are so many other dogs out there. Amaizing dogs that dwarf and if necessary destroy the supposed "bad dogs" that we have here in the U.S.

I would like to say that the newfoundland and some breeds of mastiff such as the tibetan mastiff are some of the most powerful dogs in existence. I have a newfie named sarge and he can pull anything. Tibetan mastiffs were bred as war dogs and the original breed in tibet are still very untrainable and ferocious. Extremely powerful

Staffordshire Bull Terrior... Bread to fight Bulls (All be it in numbers)

It's not the biggest, but it's DEFINATELTY got alot of muscle mass... And (Although looking almost exactly like a putbull) It is generally recognised as one of the friendliest breeds of dog there is.

Strong as hell.. When playing with ropes and toys, it can lock its jaw, then you can spin it in circles like 1m from the floor, it's awesome.. Until either you lose grip or the dog does, and you both fall arse over tit.. Infact I have a video on my facebook of us doing it - AND falling over!

When it comes down to pure fighting skill, i would say that its the Japanese Akita. No other breed could beat this breed in a brawl. I do not support senseless dog fighting in any way. I just know this because my dog Sumo a Japanese Akita was attacked by a fully grown Saint Bernard when he was just 12 months...and he kicked the Saint Bernard's a*s. And when i say kicked his a*s i mean the dog was lucky it survived. I reckon its because the Japanese Akita breed are very large dogs but at the same time they can move around like they weigh nothing. Or as the Great Muhammad Ali would say, "move like a butterfly, sting like a bee". Anyways that day gave me the shock of my life and at the same time made me a very proud owner =D.

Pitbulls can take out 5 times their weight. They would be consider strongest in comparison to weight. Mastiff breeds are strong too (Cane Corso)

The Tosa Inu is a large and extremely powerful and quite agile animal. I would say there is no other dog that is able to hold there own against this breed when it comes to raw power.

Bigger heads are linked with more jaw power (clearly). So maybe you can link that with strength?

There are many types of strong breeds such as: American Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Argentine Dogo, German Shepard Dog, Black Mouth Cur,
Boxer, English and French Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Cane Corso Mastiff, St. Bernard, Great Dane, Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, Akita, Doberman, Rottweiler, but when it comes down to ALL dogs I'm quite certain that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Pit Bull) is the dog with the most amount of muscle. Pretty much were used as bait against strong animals. Here's some brief info.
•Originating in England, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was bred for bull, bear, and lion baiting. The aforementioned "blood-sports" were officially eliminated in 1835 when Britain introduced animal welfare laws. However, "blood-sport" proponents began using this breed for organized dog fighting. Today, with their "blood-sport" history behind them, this breed has become a stable and popular family pet.
•Often referred to as the Staffie, this muscular and stocky breed exudes strength, courage, and athletic ability. They are bold, tenacious, and alert. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a fearless, protective, and determined nature and is extremely agile. Their most distinguishing and striking features are their broad head and expressive face.

All I can say is if you really look at the pitbull, you can see there broad head and how all that is muscle towards the jaw. The highest pressure recorded from the Pit Bull was 235 lbs PSI. The highest from the GSD was 238, and the highest from the Rott was 328. Although the Pitbull had less pressure then the Rottweiler and the German Shepard followed up closely, the Pitbull's pressure is all in the front teeth and the back grind down what ever is being bitten - this makes the bite more fierce and affective in a fight.

just about everyone on here is talking a load of shit. either trying to big up their own dog breed or just stating bullshit facts like staffys can lock their jaw(no they cant) or american bulldogs are the strongest. rubbish. all bull breeds are very strong and tend to have a dominant character. i agree with the first answer. newfoundlands were bred to pull people out of the water and are extremely strong, as are most mastiff breeds. they are also the biggest in size. if your talking about aggression and will power then yes, it would go to fighting dogs like the tosa inu, presa canario, pitbull, fila brasilero etc

The tallest dog breed in the world, the Irish Wolfhound, was perfected by the romans as a war dog, and was used as entertainment, where they fought exotic animals such as lions and bears. In Ireland, they use these dogs in war aswell, and to protect their livestock. The Irish Wolfhound is also known to be a glorious wolf hunter. They take the wolf down so easily, like how a cat kills a rat - shaking the neck until it snaps.

The Irish Wolfhound is graceful with an easy yet powerful gait. Historically these dogs had to not only possess speed but endurance, allowing them to follow their prey and hunt it down. They had to be hardy enough to withstand being injured whilst using their own brute force to bring the prey down. The modern representation of the breed appears to be a dog capable of doing just that.

The Akita without any doubt! Not only is the Akita the only dog that can mame and butcher a pit bull, but they do it in quickness!!! Have had both breeds and it's just no comparison, I've seen a 150lb male Akita make a 90-100lb. Pit shreck like it got hit by a car, a few times? And no am not into dog fighting, sometimes when you have dogs things happen!

Before everyone just types the first answer that comes to mind maybe you might want to do a little research. I have owned both an Akita and a German Shep. Both were very strong, but neither could hold a candle to my current dog, an American Bulldog. Pound for pound they do not get any stronger and yes friends, not that I would ever support it, an American Bully would and has slapped the snot out of the overated and over publicized Pitbull Terrier. It outwieghs it and can outfight it and out pull it. My dog has a confirmed sled pull weight of 4825 lbs he weighs in at 110 lbs. You do the math. Take a look at some pictures of the breed...thay are all muscle, and just love to work.

The Irish Wolfhound is by far the most powerful breed. They can chase down and kill a wolf in an instant. I have witnessed a wolfhound, who was attacked by a large pit bull, grab it by the neck, throw it into the air several feet, and snap its neck after landing in one bite. The saying is of this breed '' A mastiff is to the chihuahua as the wolfhound is to a mastiff.

Also long ago my cousin had a 155lb Male Akita (that was blind from inbreeding or?) and very large Pit and one day unsupervised they got into it and the result was the Pit was a basket case, had to shaved needing hundreds of stiches.. whild this "blind" Akita wasen't even phased!!!

i have owned several strong dogs , german shepherd , malamute, labradors and a wolf hybrid but the strongest dog i have ever owned was an 90 lb american staffordshire terrier... These dogs are unbelievably strong.. He would crunch up a golf ball like it was a peppermint. I know these dogs are the same dog as the apbt.. Looking at the pulling competition the pit bulls excel and hold several records ...I am an older man living in the deep south where rolling dogs was very popular and i can assure u that all the b.s. u hear about peoples pets defeating the pit bulls is ridiculous... There is a lot of bully type dogs that people confuse with apbt's but the only dog that can defeat the 60 lb pit bull is another pit bull... i have seen nearly all breeds come into the pit and the apbt will win 95% of the time....In japan they stopped the Tosa from fighting the pit bull about 20 yrs ago ... they were losing so many tosas.. the times that the tosa would win was because of silly rules that they fought by.... like no noise or stopping a dog that fights from its back. The pit bull will squeal and growl while he is fighting as if it is having fun... this is against the rules in the tosa fights .
