Assuming you filled oil in your engine 3 weeks prior to this incident it cant just disappear without it emerging somewhere- there has to be either a big pool of oil under the car or clouds of black smoke from your exhaust, either of which would have been immediately noticable.5 liters of oil cannot just evaporate.
You ask:'What the hell is going on?'- your engine is now toast. Sorry.

By driving it without any oil, you probably have ruined the engine.  Count yourself lucky that it even runs at all now.

This all goes to prove that there are some people who should never be allowed to own good American cars like Fords or Mercuries.

Next time, get a Hyundai or a Kia or a Honduh or some other piece of Asian trash; that way, when you destroy it through neglect and abuse, you'll actually be improving the automotive gene pool.

the above question is my own and i wanted to add more information incase that helps at all. when i stopped to check my car first, i noticed the oil was very low, but i started back up anyways [i was on the turnpike and would have been stranded for a few hours]. after driving a couple more minutes, the engine began to grind [the noise was like when you drive over the "idiot bumps" on the road] so i pulled over again and called some people for advice. when nothing turned up, i started again, but this time, it idled when i tried to accelerate and i couldnt go more that 30 mph with my rpm's sky high the whole time. i got to a gas station after a few miles and then saw that my oil was empty and that there was smoke coming out. i added two quarts, to hold me over until i could get my car home. although i can go more that 30 mph now, my car still idles terribly when i try to go from a stop. when im driving, the engine revs and dies down randomly. when i try to go from a stand still, the engine revs really bad and instead of it kicking in and "shooting off" like i thought it would, it just remains revved and goes uber slow. the check engine light has been on since i started driving again after my first initial stop. what the heck is going on???
