If I've been using my laptop for a few hours, then turn it off, then turn it back on again, it often "freezes" with a black screen before XP even boots. And I can't get it to turn on again until it "cools down" a little. Is t

Obviously, you have a heat-related problem, and the gizmo that is supposed to take care of that is the fan system in your laptop. You might have someone qualified check the fan(s) to see if they are running too slow...that sometimes happens with older laptops.
