Many states in the US have "work at will" laws in which any party can terminate the employment at any time for any reason.

There seems to be a matter of not telling the truth in your question. calling in sick, just to do homework, is not telling the truth. maybe your employer discovered this and thus the firing.

If you did tell a lie, your employer must believe that you may lie about something else, concerning his business.

I hope you learned a valuable lesson here.

Yes..in fact you can be fired for just about anything for any reason or no reason at all actually..at will employment. And most employers will consider that you were aware that you had to do homework when you took the job and that is not their concern..you were hired for a job and were aware of the hours and such in advance. Your homework is really not a consideration for them, you showing up for work when expected is.

In canada, they have to give you a certain amount of sick days that you can use how ever you want.

Afraid so. For one thing, its called "lying to the boss", which is grounds for dismissal. For another, its expected that you're responsible for organizing your life so that schoolwork and your job can all be managed in the proper timeframe.

Whether or not someone would actually get fired would depend mainly on their boss and their relationship to the boss, as well as the quality of their work and value to the business.

That depends on the Employer and how often someone calls in sick. If it was once, I dont think they would be fired.

Sure they can. This is why they have child labor laws, that limit the amount of time you can work when you are active in school. If this does happen, then somewhere, you are taking the little free time you do have and not doing your homework. Sorry! Good luck to you, I do know it is hard!

not necessarily, unless it becomes a reoccuring theme.

however your boss will probably be much more understanding if you tell him you need to get your schoolwork done so you can't come in and try to make up the time you missed later on.

usually people deal with the truth better.
