Convenience stores combine with gas stations all the time in America. Why do they remain separate in Japan?

    I think it's because until recently there were no self-serve gas stations anywhere in Japan. Nowadays they are still limited and unpopular. Go figure.
    Also, conbeanies are usually small walk-ins.

    I think its because in japan they take food very serious and alot of people there commute rather then drive

    Could be lack of space in Japan.

    Or, maybe they have so many people, that making a combination would create more havoc on an already crowded country.

    I don't know. In South Africa they are also combined.
