Question

Help answer this question below.

I am not a Scientologist, but I got added to their mailing list back in the 1980's. They wouldn't remove me when I asked. Now, 20 years and 6 addresses later, they STILL send things to me. Anyone else have this problem?

Church staff just never ever ever get the picture. You can tell them a zillion times that you are't interested, or that you can't have mail or anything you want to tell them to get them to stop and they won't stop. They aren't allowed to. Re another answer someone posted- yes, when I was in CofS, I did see someone put in a complaint with the postmaster and it did work. I'll also tell you what I did once though it's time consuming and maybe a bit expensive but it did work-- I opened a po box near where I worked which I actually did for convenience's sake not because of CofS. Anyway, I moved and didn't want the po box anymore so I changed my address directly with all creditors and correspondents but did not leave a forwarding address. It got me off the mailing list.

Uh, it's still not a good idea to piss these folks off, even if they've revoked the "fair game" policy. I'd say send them occaisional donations thanking them for the spam. Imagine a flat tire in gang territory: be nice to anyone who stops to watch :-)

Yes, you are allowed to refuse mail. Just write on it "refused" and also "return to sender".
I do believe you can put in a greivance with the postmaster.

You could try sending random stuff back to them. After a few thousand credit card promotions and old newspaper clippings, I'm sure they'll get the point.

If you haven't tried this already, consider sending them a letter in one of their own return envelopes telling them that you are not interested and any further mailings will be considered harassment. Make sure you make a photocopy of whatever you send them and keep it for your files.

Please bear in mind if you decide to do this that the "Church" of Scientology can get pretty nasty at times. Chances are asking them to knock it off won't incur too much wrath, but if it doesn't work, pushing them further may be unwise. On the other hand, if any of their mailings include a pre-paid return envelope, you can have fun mailing them all sorts of things that they will have to pay for.

    Done. never again.

Threaten legal action, or write back some "entheta". Entheta would be saying they're a cult, and attacks on the church. However, you would most likely be banned from being able to take any church services if they dead file you. Theatening legal action would probably be the best way to go.
