First off, Japan and the US have different emissions regulations.
Second, USDM engines must be detuned as we run lower octane fuel than Japan. JDM engines usually have some combination of higher compression, more aggressive cams, tuned ECU, and/or higher turbo boost.
While a JDM engine can usually run fine on our premium grades, most Americans cheap out and run 87-only and have great derision for anyone who wastes their money on the higher grades. Running 17 psi of boost with high compression isn't safe on 87.

Engine has had slipping sensation lately. Today it jerked, slipped, & check engine light came on. Then it died. Did restart. Thoughts?

It's not exactly that; it's WHY it needs premium.
They make more power, but the way that they do so has the side effect of requiring premium gas.
The reason they are popular with tuners is the power.
