  • Simplistically speaking... Different plants use different nutrients. Growing the same crop year after year will deplete some soil chemistry. Plants will also drop or leave parts which then become part of the soil. If you can grow something that adds the stuff your other crop depletes that would be ideal. The other big one is disease. If a diseased plant leaves remnants of infection on the soil, the disease can infect the next crop and spread. Many crop diseases do not affect dissimilar crops. So, by rotating crops, you reduce the spread of disease and increase the life of the fertility of the soil. I am sure there are other considerations, hopefully someone more informed will add information.
