Sunni and Shia are two branches of Islam, whereas Arabs are an ethnic group. Muslims who are not Arabs can also belong to the Sunni and Shia branches of the Islamic faith. Thus you can have Christian Arabs, Sunni Muslim Arabs and Shia Muslim Arabs, and you can also have Sunni non-Arabs (the Kurds of northern Iraq, for example) and Shia non-Arabs (Iranians, for example).

Sunnis and Shi'ites are both Muslim, they're different branches of Islam. The split goes way back, its based in a disagreement about who should have been Mohammed's successor when he died.

Its sort of like the rift between Catholics and Protestants in Christianity -- Northern Ireland has suffered from vicious fighting between these groups for many years. The fact that both claim to follow the teachings of a man who preached non-violence and love just adds a little ironic spice to the idiocy.

In addtion to the above info, I believe the Sunni Muslims are the largest branch (have more followers) than the Shi'ites. There are a few differences in the way they pray and other minor differences.

Well I am not a journalist but I think that related to the terrorist networks in many non arab countries like Pakistan, or Afganistan they might refer to Sunni Arabs and in Iraq which is an Arab country mostly they might refer to sunni Arab to differntiate from Shiya or any Iranians or other nationalities that could be present but I am not sure about that.

Sunni muslims can be of any ethnic background just like Shiya so they want to emphasize that the person is an Arab and a Sunni for whatever reason?
